Apprenticeships (phase training)
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a work-based technical training route to a qualification for learners who are interested in working in a technical field so that they can become certified artisans.
Apprenticeship training traditionally spans a three-year period on a block programme. An apprentice is employed through an apprenticeship contract signed with an employer and a training provider to complete a full apprenticeship programme.
Apprentices attend institutional training with an accredited training provider to acquire trade-related knowledge and theory and practical hand skills. They also spend some time in a workplace working under the guidance of a qualified artisan to become proficient in the trade.
Apprentices earn while they learn as they are paid for the time they spend working with an employer during their apprenticeship. Apprenticeships equip learners with skills that enable them to find employment or enable them to run their own businesses.
DSTT offers Apprenticeships in the Mechanical Trades:
Mechanical Fitting
Boiler making and
Welding
This ultimately culminates in a trade test conducted at the Centre.
DSTT is currently accredited in trade testing:
Welders and
Mechanical Fitters
The Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) through the National Artisan Moderating Body (NAMB) issues certificates to apprentices that have been declared competent after the trade test.
Artisans are in high demand in South Africa as many trades are listed as “scarce skills”.
